In June 1998 BARA initiated A Qualitative Study of the Impacts of CARE's Road Improvements on Household Livelihood Security in Bangladesh. This study is an ethnographic supplement to a large-scale socioeconomic impact assessment survey that was designed and guided by an agricultural economist from U of A. The qualitative component involves working with local CARE staff to deepen and contextualize the survey data through open ended interviews and focus group discussions with different groups of road users (such as rickshaw pullers, shop owners, local school and health personnel, etc) as well as people living along the roads. A draft report is due in August 1999. The project also involves training local staff in ethnographic and field investigation methods.
