Cultural Affiliations and Traditional Uses of
the Flagstaff Area National Monuments
Cultural Resource
Studies
This series of projects involves the National Monuments of the Flagstaff area - Sunset Crater Volcano, Walnut Canyon, and Wupatki. It began with a review, which also included Navajo National Monument, of existing consultation and archaeological documentation found in National Park Service records. The review documented consultation relations with eight groups: Hopi, Zuni, Navajo, four Western Apache tribes, Hualapai, Havasupai, two Yavapai tribes, and San Juan Southern Paiute. It identified potential affiliation and/or association of the eight groups with the three Flagstaff monuments, and provided recommendations for future research. The second study was a traditional use study of the three Flagstaff area monuments, which elaborated on the kinds of relationships people had with the area and features found in the parks. The third study of this series focuses again on cultural affiliation by examining documents recommended in the review and other documents identified by the tribes and through literature review. The results of these studies further park managers' understanding of the complex relationships of many tribes who shared the land and resources now occupied by the national monuments and Flagstaff.
